SINGAPORE - The Singapore Book Fair 2014（新加坡书展）will be held at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Exhibition Hall 401 - 402 from 10 to 16 June 2014.
The annual event is open daily from 11am to 10pm, except for 10 June (4pm to 10pm) and 16 June (11am to 8pm). Admission is free.
Back for the 29th year, the Singapore Book Fair is organised by Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese Newspapers Division (新加坡报业控股华文报集团) and supported by Ministry of Education（新加坡教育部）, National Library Board（国家图书馆管理局), Institute of Technical Education（新加坡工艺教育局）, Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao, Shin Min Daily News, The Straits Times and UFM100.3.
About 150 publishers across Asia will be showcased this year, together with a wide range of educational materials, teaching resources, supplementary materials, periodicals, enrichment programmes.
Seminars by renowned local and foreign writers from China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and United States will be a highlight at the fair. They will speak on a wide range of topics including lifestyle, parenting, healthcare and fengshui. Some authors will also conduct book review discussions.
Notable writers such as Master Xiao Hong Chi （萧宏慈老师), a Chinese specialist in La Jin Pai Da Therapy （拉筋拍打) will speak at the seminar. A special focus will be on Taiwanese writers at the Taiwan Writer's Night (爱阅读*悦读爱) from 12 to 15 June. Four celebrated Taiwanese writers, namely Dr. Hao Yu Xiang (郝誉翔博士), Mdm Chen Yuhong (陈育虹女士), Mr Lo Chih Cheng (罗智成先生) and Mr Yang Chao (杨照先生) will share about their passion on reading, writing and the world of literature.
The Book Swop, which encourages book lovers to exchange books with other avid readers, is back by popular demand. It is jointly organised by Radin Mas Citizens' Consultative Committee and National Library Board (NLB).
Appearing for the first time at the book fair is My Tree House, a 'green library' which showcases green building technologies and environmentally sustainable materials. It is a replica of the original one set up at Central Public Library and aims to educate the public, especially children, on the importance of conserving the environment. The replica, which is located at the Activity Corner of the fair, is jointly sponsored by National Library Board and City Developments Limited (CDL). There will also be daily activities such as storytelling sessions and handicraft workshops at the Activity Corner.
In line with the objective of the Singapore Book Fair, which is to foster reading habit and inculcate the importance of education amongst the young, the organiser, with the support of Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, will issue S$50,000 worth of book vouchers to over 1000 children from low-income families. These children are from self-help groups including the Chinese Development Assistance Council, Mendaki, Sinda and the Singapore Eurasian Association. Each child will receive S$50 worth of book vouchers to purchase books and education materials.
Over 150,000 visitors are expected at the fair this year. Apart from the wide range of books, this year's event will also include book launches, meet-the-author sessions, educational talks, as well as copyright signing ceremony.
Mr Teo Ser Luck, Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Mayor of North East District, will be the Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony on 11 June. He will also present the Inspiring Chinese Language Teachers Awards （全国模范华文教师奖）at the opening ceremony. There are 9 winners this year.
