25th Singapore International Film Festival kicks off

SINGAPORE: The 25th Singapore International Film Festival kicked off on Thursday evening (Dec 4) after a two-year hiatus. A total of 147 films from 50 countries will be screened during the festival, which ends on Dec 14.

International stars Zhang Ziyi, Tong Dawei and director John Woo graced the red carpet to promote their latest film, The Crossing.

Zhang Ziyi said filming conditions were tough in Beijing and joked that if the movie was shot in Singapore instead, it would have been a lot more comfortable.

Other stars included French actress Juliette Binoche, as well as cast members of Unlucky Plaza - the opening film of this year's festival.

At the event, Communications and Information Minister Yaacob Ibrahim announced a project called Spotlight on Singapore Cinema to mark Singapore's Golden Jubilee next year.

It will be a collaboration between the Media Development Authority, National Library Board and the National Heritage Board.

Dr Yaacob said: 'This collective effort will see selected iconic films that reflect Singapore's history, culture and landscape restored and screened to the public. Through this, we hope to keep important pieces of Singapore's film heritage alive and share them with Singaporeans from different walks of life and inspire future generations of filmmakers.'
