HONG KONG - Indian drama ' Court' added to its haul of festival prizes by winning the Silver Screen Award for best film at the revived Singapore International Film Festival (Dec. 4-14, 2014).
The film's first time feature director Chaitanya Tamhane also took home the best director award. The two awards earn him a combined US$11,600 (S$15,000) and a further US$23,200 (S$30,000) of in kind benefits.
'This glittering gem dazzles with its simplicity, elegance and breathtaking naturalism. Every facet of this film shines, from the humanity of its screenplay, to the originality of its structure, to the assuredness of its direction,' said a jury that was headed by China's Wang Xiaoshuai.
'Court' previously won the Horizons prize at Venice and the new talent award at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival.
There was a US$1,550 (S$2,000) prize for Sekar Sari as best performer in 'Siti' and a further special mention for Koean film 'Alive'. The best Southeast Asian short film was 'Granny' (aka 'Dahdi') by Kirsten Tan.
The SGIFF also presented an honorary award to Im Kwon-taek, one of South Korea's most respected and prolific directors, and a tribute to the late Sir Run Run Shaw, who founded Shaw Brothers Studio and TVB.
The awards evening was attended by actress Natassja Kinski, Taiwanese actor Chen Bolin, Hong Kong actress Cheng Pei Pei, and Singapore director Anthony Chen.
