SINGAPORE - The 25 year old Singapore International Film Festival is to be revived next year after a two year hiatus.
The festival - labelled as SGIFF - will be held in December 2014 and co-located at around the same time as next year's Asian TV Forum content market and ScreenSingapore convention.
The revival was announced Wednesday by Yaacob Ibrahim, Singapore's minister for Communications and Information, at the opening of ScreenSingapore.
Ibrahim said that the SGIFF will have a South East Asian focus and include 'film awards for trade professionals and public film screenings for Singaporeans.'
'We are also reviving a home favorite, the Silver Screen Awards, which has been instrumental in launching the careers of some of Singapore's most notable film-makers such as Royston Tan, Eric Khoo, Kelvin Tong and Boo Junfeng. We will also bring back the Asian film competition of the Silver Screen Awards back, to recognize outstanding films and film-makers from the region,' said Ibrahim.
Wahyuni Hadi, noted producer and one of the producers of ' Ilo Ilo,' has been appointed as festival director.
'We will stick to a familiar size of 50-80 films,' Hadi told Variety. 'The focus will be on quality and would like Singapore and South East Asian premieres where possible.'
Hadi said that the SGIFF will be run on a non-profit basis and be independent from government, though the Media Development Authority may contribute financially. 'We will begin fund-raising and finding commercial sponsors next year,' she said.
Hadi will appoint a small team of film selectors.
The board of the SGIFF will include exhibitor and former head of the Hong Kong Film Festival Shaw Soo Wei; producer Mike Wiluan ('Serangoon Road') and Tisch Asia professor Michael Lim.
