Vietnam U

Presented with chance after chance against Laos on Sunday, the Singapore Under-23 boys contrived to spurn all but one as they were held 1-1 in their Group A opener. That was a bitter blow in their quest for SEA Games gold, especially considering that Laos had their captain sent off after just two minutes. Aide Iskandar's team took the lead through Sahil Suhaimi's well-taken volley in the 27th minute, but were punished for their profligacy when Khuanta Sivongthong headed in a 86th-minute equaliser. Now up against Vietnam in their second game on Tuesday, there is no doubt that the Young Lions have to do better. Their opponents made light work of Brunei in their opening game, thumping in seven goals without reply.Le Van Thang grabbed a brace, with the remaining five goals accounted for by five different team-mates, demonstrating the quality the Vietnamese have all over the pitch. Apart from their firepower, captain Nguyen Van Quyet - who already ahs 12 caps for the senior side - drives the team on from midfield. The Singapore side will definitely have to work on their finishing, as they are not likely to have as many chances as they did against Laos. Clear-cut opportunities were wasted, while they also struggled to break down 10-man Laos at times.Faris Ramli could be in for a start after coming off the bench and along with Shahfiq Ghani, that should provide more creativity. Captain Hariss Harun will have to control the midfield and Singapore need to stay disciplined and compact against Vietnam, while taking their chances when they come. The match will kick off at 8.15p.m Singapore time at the Zayyarthiri Stadium in Naypyidaw.
