Singapore Airlines crew in horse

Five Singapore Airlines employees were involved in a crash near Christchurch that left two people with serious injuries.

The crash happened about 10.40am yesterday at the intersection of Maddisons Rd and Weedons Ross Rd, about 4.5 kilometres north of Rolleston.

A silver five-door hatchback carrying the five Singapore Airlines staff was travelling south along Maddisons Rd before it collided with a northbound four-wheel-drive towing a horse float.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman said two seriously injured people, who were sitting in the rear seat of the hatchback, remained in hospital last night.

Two women and a man had been treated and discharged last night.

Police said no other injuries were reported and the horse being towed in the float appeared to be uninjured.

Singapore Airlines issued a statement last night confirming five of its crew members were involved in the crash.

'Our immediate concern is for the welfare of our staff and we shall accord them and their families the highest standard of care and assistance,' the statement said.

Jockey Kylie Williams came across the crash while driving home to Rolleston with her 12-year-old son.

She noticed the front of the horse float was 'all smashed' and the door had come off.

'Being a horsey person I thought I'd stop and see if they were all ok with the horse. They were just worried about getting the horse off and getting it safe.'

The dark brown horse 'seemed to be good' following the crash, but had a small cut under one ear.

His legs had been bandaged for protection while travelling, which Williams thought probably saved him from further injury.

The driver of the 4WD was also uninjured, but had been 'pretty shaken' by the crash.

Williams said she saw an Asian man in the driver's seat of the other vehicle, and an Asian woman in the front passenger seat.

Emergency services were busy getting everyone out of the vehicle, so Williams left after arranging for the horse to be taken to a nearby paddock.

'It's not one of those things you see every day and don't want to see,' she said.

A police investigation into the cause of the crash was underway.
