Jokowi in Singapore for son's graduation: Other leaders whose children studied ...

SINGAPORE - Indonesian President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo flew to Singapore on Friday, to attend his youngest son's graduation ceremony.


Kaesang Pangarep, 19, who completed his international baccalaureate, studied at ACS International Singapore.


Mr Joko's elder son Gibran Rakabuming, 27, also spent some years at the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS).


He now runs a catering and wedding planning business in their hometown Solo.


Mr Joko is not the only Indonesian leader to have sent his children to study here.


Here are some of leaders whose children went to Singapore schools.


1. Both of former Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's sons attended graduate school at the National Technological University (NTU).

His elder son, Major Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, 36, graduated from the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies with a master's degree in strategic studies in 2006.


Major Agus is the chief of operations at the Army Strategic Reserve Command's (Kostrad) 17th Airborne Brigade, and helped start the Indonesian Defence University.

His brother and politician Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, 33, also graduated from NTU with a master's of science in International Political Economy in 2007.

2. Bona, 25, daughter of Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, graduated last year with a master's degree after completing the MDIS-University of Wales programme.


Her 90-year-old father, who has ruled Zimbabwe with an iron fist since 1980, attended Bona's graduation with his wife Grace.

3. Loro Horta, son of East Timor's second Prime Minister, topped his Strategic Studies class in 2006 and received a gold medal from the then Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies. The school was renamed the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in 2007. He also received a book prize for best dissertation.


His father, Nobel Peace laureate Jose Ramos-Horta, was Prime Minister of East Timor from 2006 to 2012.


4. In that same 2006 cohort was Nguyen Minh An, 33, son of Vietnam's then President Nguyen Minh Triet. He graduated with a master's in business administration. Mr Nguyen Minh Triet was president of Vietnam from 2006 to 2011.


5. Some royalty have also attended Singapore schools.

Prince Haji Abdul Azim, 32, second son of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, is an alumnus of Raffles Institution and Rosyth Primary School. He is third in line to the throne.


Meanwhile, Prince Sisowath Chivannariddh of Cambodia, grandson of King Norodom Sihanouk, graduated from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in 2004, according to a school publication.
