Singapore opens S$950m underground rock cavern at Jurong

SINGAPORE: The Jurong Rock Caverns in Singapore was officially opened on Tuesday (Sep 2) by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.


The caverns, built at a cost of S$950 million, is Southeast Asia's first commercial underground rock cavern storage facility for liquid hydrocarbons. It is also the deepest known underground public works initiative in the country to date.


The caverns will be used to store 1.47 million cubic metres of liquid hydrocarbons, such as crude oil and condensate. In other words, the storage capacity is equivalent to 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
